Seed Planting Cluster Bomb

Anti War activists hate cluster bombs – mostly because they can be used to deploy anti personnel mines which don’t get picked up long after the last bullet has been fired. And when they go off, even children are victims. But can the technology be harnessed for more constructive and green purposes? Designer Hwang Jin Wook seems to think so and as such, he came up with the “Seedbomb.”

The concept is amazingly simple and represents the coolness of out of the box thinking. Instead of tiny bombs known as “bomblets” or anti personnel mines, the SeedBomb has Seed capsules aligned in a cluster configuration. Each cluster of capsules is packed into a single bomb with dozens of others and when the bomb reaches optimum altitude, the clusters are released to embed all around the impact area. Each capsule contains soil and seeds housed in a biodegradable plastic. The soil is packed with plant rich nutrients and moisture enough to allow the plant seed to germinate (the plastic canister acts as a defacto greenhouse) and grow until the plant can sustain itself. As the plant matures, the biodegradable plastic canister deteriorates until there’s nothing left.

The idea is brilliant for deploying to areas stricken by desertification or deforestation. And It’s easy to see the Forestry department using them to reseed areas that have recently fallen victim to wildfires or bark beetle infestation. But can just planting plants change an environment? Not on it’s own, but if you consider that with all the golf courses it has, that the average temperature of Palm Springs has DROPPED 20 degrees in the last 25 years, it’s worth looking at.

Thanko’s New MP4 Watch puts a camera on your wrist

This isn’t the first time we have reported on Thanko devices, and if they keep putting out devices like an MP4 Watch with Video Camera, it won’t be the last. After all, a watch with a video camera feels like it was taken right out of James Bond or Dick Tracy.

The Thanko MP4 watch also supports other types of digital formats including MP3, WPA, WMA, and can also display JPG files. I am assuming that everything can be downloaded via the mini USB port on the side.

You can’t help but like all the features in these kind of watches, but they always end up looking so thick. I had a chance to try out the MP4 watch from Brando, and it was like having a deck of cards strapped to my wrist. It appears that Thanko was not able to perfect their design.

I’m not certain why you would want a camera on a watch, except for covert operations. I believe that the lens is on the side, so if you are trying to film in secret, you will probably be a dead giveaway.

The price will put a lot people off, but I’m sure it will drop at some point, and in the end of the day, it’s worth it!

Battle against terror goes ‘outdoor’ in Mumbai

Following the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, angry citizens are venting their feelings and opinions in the form of blogs, candlelight vigils and protests. Now, hoardings about fighting terrorism have sprung up across the city.

One of the first messages seen on hoardings read “Enough is Enough” and announced the peace rally held on December 3 at the Gateway of India, close to the Taj Hotel, where one of the terror attacks took place. The hoarding generated a buzz because it featured the name of no brand, company or person. Citizens gathered at the Gateway of India in large numbers with handheld signs and candles, voicing their views on the attacks.

DNA has launched a campaign in Mumbai, putting up hoardings that read “Enough of tolerance? Speak up.” and “Spirit of Mumbai. For how long?” The campaign, which is called DNA Eyes and Ears – People Protection Group, will provide people with a fast and decisive means of getting in touch with the concerned authorities in a crisis situation.

Solar powered iPod - yes that is true !

I’m not sure if the world needs another type of PMP, but I will definitely give Shiro credit for trying something different.

Shiro has put a solar cell on the back of the SQ-S, which gives the user the option to charge the device with the power of the sun. Considering that power to PMPs is always an issue for mobile music, it is refreshing to see a PMP that does not require a wired charging method like an AC cord or USB cable.

The user has the option of using a USB cable if he or she wants to. Just to put it in perspective, it takes six hours with a “full sun” to charge the SQ-6, but only four hours with the USB. With a full charge, the SQ-S is capable of up to 38 hours of music playback and 10 hours of video playback.

The screen of the SQ-S is a 1.8 inch 65K color display, made for both video and photo playback. The SQ-S comes with 16GB of built-in memory, but does not have a memory card slot. It supports formats of MP3, WMA, WAV, FLAC, APE, OGG, and M4A. It also has an FM radio and is capable of FM recording.

Word on the street has it that Apple will be rolling out a new line of laptop computers sometime next week, including an entry level device that won’t break the bank while jumping on the coveted Apple bandwagon. ZumReed’s Turntable Speaker

I’ve seen a couple different speakers from ZumReed, but I think this new one is my new favorite. The tiny little turntable would be ultra-portable and look good while doing it. It’s one of the few that would make a cool keychain. With the little strap you could attach it to your purse or any other bags you might carry on a regular basis. It’d also be small enough to slip into your pocket, especially with its slim shape. Although you probably should be careful not to sit down with it in your back pocket, otherwise you’ll probably have to pick up a new one.

It comes in the three different colors shown here, black white and orange. You can easily see where the sound itself will come out of from the picture. If you spin that spot, that is also how you control the volume. The speakers come with a built-in rechargeable battery. If you hook it up to your USB port, for every hour you charge it you’ll get three hours of music.

Philips Luxe MP3 player

Philips is entering the MP3 player market with something vastly different from what they used to do in the past, and this time round the Luxe might not come with a whole lot of internal memory (just a paltry 2GB), but it is interesting as it can also function as a Bluetooth headset, allowing you to interrupt your music session with incoming calls seamlessly. The one line LCD display lets you know who is calling while your cell phone remains tucked away in your pocket. Sounds pretty redundant though, since cell phones are pretty capable MP3 players in their own right these days, so separating that function onto a Bluetooth headset is more of a novelty. Gotta love the design though as it would go down well with a Nokia Prism in tow. The Philips Luxe MP3 player cum Bluetooth headset will be released in Singapore next month for approximately $94.

Sonic Vox has no flame to play with

We have covered iPhone applications from Smule before, like the Sonic Lighter, which gives you a flame for your portable touchscreen. While there might not be a practical use for a virtual flame, Smule has released the Sonic Vox, something that will bring even more fun.

Sonic Vox has no flame to play with, but you can have some fun playing with your voice. This isn’t some application where you record your voice, and the Sonic Vox distorts it on the playback. The Sonic Vox will distort it in real-time.

All you need to do is set the pitch and the level of echo effect on the touchscreen. You can then make yourself sound like someone like Gollum. It reminds me of the Optimus Prime voice changer toy, but without the blue mask.

According to Smule, they say the Sonic Vox can work from phone to phone, but my source says that it does not work that way. However, if a Sonic Vox iPhone is hooked up to a speaker, MacBook, or boom box, then you can still have lots of fun channeling your inner James Earl Jones.

So if you want to have fun playing with your voice, then you can shell out 99 cents to the App store for the Sonic Vox.

If you’re looking for a USB drive that has a little bit of history to it, much like the Mahjong USB drive, you might check out these little warriors. These terracotta warriors are a 7in tall replica of the Xi’an terracotta warriors, found in 1974 perfectly preserved for over 2,000 years. The warriors found at that point were underground, life-sized and were over 6,000 of them. Found by a farmer no less that was digging a well. That’d definitely make the task of digging a hole a lot more interesting.

The drives come in anywhere from 1GB-8GB. It supports password protection, and has a limited lifetime warranty. Which likely means that this drive is going to be an expensive one. Unfortunately there’s no way to tell on that. All the site does is list where you could find one of these drives to purchase, not how much you will pay at the shop once you do indeed find it.

It’s always nice to have a USB gaming controller that you’re comfortable with and enjoy using. There are a few out there, one being the metal game pad shown here a couple months ago. However, what if you could have a gaming controller that you were already overly familiar with? I think for most gamers that would trump any extra perks other USB controllers claim to have. You can actually purchase this, this isn’t a situation where you will have to magically learn how to mod controllers. Motorola and KODAK's MOTOZINE ZN5 camera phone has finally made it to the Indian market. Sony Ericsson's Cyber-Shot series has got more competition now. With features that include Motorola's "ModeShift Technology" and KODAK's "Imaging Technology" this camera could just give the other mobile in this segment a run for their pixels. The ZN5 also comes with a Xenon flash. It has a 2.4-inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 256k colors. City-In-a-Pyramid Could House a Million Dubaians, Power Itself !

A particularly optimistic design firm in Dubai called Timelinks has proposed designs for the Ziggurat, a complete city to be layered inside of a massive pyramid that could serve as home for a million people at a time. Timelinks is currently seeking patents for a variety of technologies that would make such a building possible, including a three axis public transportation system that would run residents up, through and across the pyramid. They've also claimed that with a hybrid wind, solar and steam power the Ziggurat would be able to meet its own power needs, and that there would be enough room to allow for some minor agriculture in designated "green spaces."
Before you just write this off as another wacky internet design concept, consider the absurdly ostentatious structures that Dubai has already built, and the fact that unlike the hyperluxurious ego-boosters currently under construction, the Ziggurat might be a viable housing solution for people who don't have a natural resource-infused trust fund.

Philips has stumped up a new home theater system that's as small, and almost as round as, a soccer ball—for those of us bored of boring, standard rectangular entertainment gadgets. Though it's tiny, it fits in an iPod dock, a five-channel amp, six speakers and a subwoofer built into the base. It must be pretty cramped inside, since it's just 10.75-inches across, and only 6.75 high. The DVD player can cope with DivX, MPEG-4 and WMV, and upscales to 1080p over HDMI and the CD player can read MP3 discs, and it's got USB-in. Xbox 360 Goes Coin-Op..

While the Xbox 360 arcade is ironically the least expensive version of 360, The Arcade Station T2 is the probably the most expensive...and it actually belongs in an arcade. Essentially an arcade cabinet housing an Xbox 360, the Arcade Station T2 features two controllers, memory card slots and system link gaming (which we're assuming means local multiplayer, not full LIVE access). Potentially bundled games could include Halo 3, FIFA 08, Assassins Creed and Devil May Cry 4, but players won't need to shove in more quarters every time Master Chief gets teabagged. Their thumb drives hold up to 8 Gigabytes of data, but includes a hardware encryption chip that scrambles the data so as to be completely unreadable without a password.
Passwords can be hacked, but not the IronKey. It's built to withstand attacks both virtual and physical. 10 incorrect password attempts, and the encryption chip self-destructs, making the contents of the flash drive totally unreadable. The contents of the drive are filled with epoxy, so if a hacker tries to physically access the chips, he'd more likely damage them instead. Even if he did get access to the memory chips, they'd be worthless without the encryption chip. Electron-shielded, even a scanning electron microscope can't get inside.

Since everything is going wireless these days, we are clearly looking at a future where all headphones will be wireless. There are many models of wireless headphones on the market today, and one that I have recently encountered is the Sennheiser MX W1 Totally Wireless Headphones.
The Sennheiser MX W1 is able to wirelessly connect to an MP3 Player, but it does not use any Bluetooth at all. Instead, it relies on Kleer corporation’s digital transmission technology, which uses the same 2.4 GHz range, but has better streaming of CD-quality sound for your ears.
The user needs to attach a transmitter to his or her MP3 Player via headphone jack. In fact, I believe these wireless headphones will work for any device that has a headphone jack.
It doesn’t look like the transmitter is powered by the MP3 Player or other electronic device, as you will also have to charge the transmitter and earbuds. The transmitter will last for about 10 hours, while the earbuds can last 3 to 5 hours. The headphones come with a special carrying case with a built-in battery that allows a full recharge of the earbuds three times.

It’s rare that we’re given a glimpse inside Apple’s future design book, but the latest findings from one tech researcher points towards the Mac-maker developing wearable video screens.
According to Research and Markets’ latest report, both Apple and Sony are investigating screens that could be worn inside glasses.
“Today’s personal viewers provide video only with limited visibility of the environment. Sony and Apple are developing the next generation personal viewer, the navigation/video sunglasses. These products will offer navigation features in full see-through mode as well as video viewing with a clip-on to block the background,” the report explains.
Apparently, there’s a big market in both high street stores and the military for video goggles. Now, who wants to place a bet on Steve Jobs calling his creation the iGlasses?

10 Simple Ways To Speed Up Windows XP...

I’ve focused here on the ones which are simple to do and won’t cause problems if you get it wrong, rather than listing registry tweaks etc.

1. Disable Indexing Services
Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
Go to Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Double-click Add/Remove Programs
Click the Add/Remove Window Components
Uncheck the Indexing services
Click Next

2. Optimise Display Settings
Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:
Go to Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Advanced tab
In the Performance tab click Settings
Leave only the following ticked:
Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

3. Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
Open My Computer
Click on Tools menu
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab.
Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
Click Apply
Click Ok
Reboot your computer

4. Disable Performance Counters
Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below

5. Improve Memory Usage
Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:
Go to Show Wizard and select All
Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing
Exit and Save Cacheman
Restart Windows

6. Optimise your internet connection
There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.
Download and install
Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
Check Optimal Settings then Apply
Reboot

7. Optimise Your Pagefile
If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties
Select the Advanced tab
Under Performance choose the Settings button
Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

8. Run BootVis - Improve Boot Times
BootVis will significantly improve boot times
Download and Run
Select Trace
Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
Reboot.
When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

9. Remove the Desktop Picture
Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.
Right click on Desktop and select Properties
Select the Desktop tab
In the Background window select None
Click Ok

10. Remove Fonts for Speed
Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.
Open Control Panel
Open Fonts folder
Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

India among top 10 spam sending countries!

Secure Computing, a public company that provides enterprise security solution, recently published the Internet Threats Report for the second quarter of 2008. Among other findings, the report shows that while spam volume and new zombies have decreased in the past quarter, enterprises and home users are increasingly being attacked through malicious Web content and blended security attacks.According to the report India figures among the top 10 spam sending countries, accounting for nearly 3 per cent of spam sent globally in the second quarter of 2008, says The Economic Times, quoting the report. The report further notes that spam or unsolicited e-mails sent from emerging markets is expected to grow as the Internet infrastructure improves. According to Secure Computing, the top 10 countries account for 55 per cent of the world's spam volume. While US topped the spammers' list with a 16.56 per cent contribution, Russia comes second with nearly half of that. The other countries in the list are Turkey, Brazil, Italy and China. India is ranked ninth in the list. The report states that even though the overall spam volume is up 280 per cent from Q2 2007 to Q2 2008, spam volumes have decreased by 40 per cent this quarter. Even though both spam and new zombies are down this year, Secure Computing researchers point to other areas that are increasingly problematic.

LG Announces 8 Megapixel Mobile Handset

LG has announced yet another touch screen handset that could be their next iKiller. The KC910 will be going up against the other 8 megapixel camera phones out there like Samsung’s INNOV8 and of course SE’s C905 both of which happen to be sliders unlike the 910 which is simply a touch screen handset.
It has a 3-inch TFT touch screen with a 240 x 400 pixel resolution and 256k colors. Aside from the 8MP auto-focus camera that uses Schneider-Kreuznach optics and has a Xenon flash, it’s able to record video with VGA (30fps) and QVGA (120fps) quality. The camera also uses a geo-tagging feature that works in tandem with its onboard GPS receiver. With regards to connectivity the handset supports Wi-fi, 3G with HSDPA, Bluetooth with A2DP support and of course USB connectivity as well. The KC910 also has a lot to offer in the media department with a preloaded codec that supports Xvid and DivX video playback and Dolby sound for music. Other features also include microSD support for external memory and a TV out feature. Reports also state that unlike the other 8MP camera phones I mentioned, this one will be thinner considering it doesn’t have a keypad.

Solar Powered Handheld MP4 and Nintendo Emulator

Here’s a third-party Nintendo emulator that doesn’t look like total garbage. Though it has the typical generic name of Solar MP4, this little device actually has some impressive features. It can play MP4 files up to 320×240 in size on its 3.5 inch TFT screen, it also has built-in emulators for NES, GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. Of course you have to use ROMS loaded via an SD card, but those are easy enough to find. It can even function as an e-Book reader with the ability to read out loud any text file as long as it’s written in English or Chinese.

Secure Computing Corporation SCUR), has come out with its second monthly report that outlines major spam waves in the month of July. The Secure Computing TrustedSource Research Team detected a spam-based email attack that links to new Web-based malware and features news on Angelina Jolie as bait. Both the Web and email campaigns were detected jointly by Secure Computing's Secure Web (Webwasher) and Secure Mail (IronMail) products, and successfully correlated by the company's global reputation system, TrustedSource.On average, about 2.28 percent of the total global daily email volume contains subjects like "Angelina Jolie naked," "Angelina Jolie nude movie," and "Angelina Jolie naked video." Approximately 100,000 unique IP addresses were identified as responsible for this spam on the first day of its outbreak.The "Angelina Jolie" spam campaign contains a URL linked to an executable binary, mostly seen as msvideoc.exe hosted at multiple domains. Secure Web's proactive scanning engine identified it as "Trojan.Crypt.XPACK.GEN," and both Secure Web and Secure Web Protection Service users were protected from the beginning.Another trend, the company has noticed is has been steady waves of mass-mailings hitting users' inboxes with fake invoices. For example, fake UPS messages claimed that a package couldn't be delivered and was returned, and instructed the user to print an attached invoice-which contained malware.

iRiver’s new Spinn PMP is a touch screen enabled player that also provides users with haptic feedback. It has a large 3.2-inch touch screen AMOLED display with a 480 x 272 pixel resolution. The PMP supports Bluetooth v2.0 connectivity as well as T-DMB TV. It has 8GB of onboard flash memory.
The player has a large wheel that uses 3D technology for navigating the various menus in the PMP. Its other features include a JPEG viewer, FM radio voice recorder, text viewer and a dictionary. Two models will be launched – 4GB and 8GB - in White and Silver.

The Spinn is available on pre-order in South Korea with the 4GB model for approximately Rs. 11,000 ($259) and 8GB for about Rs. 12,690 (about $299).

Gigesh: I got some comments of people on iPhone launch in India. The decision by Vodafone to price the Apple iPhone 3G at Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100, for 8GB and 16GB respectively has disappointed thousands of eagerly awaiting mobile users in the country.Expected to be priced in the range of Rs.16,000 to Rs 20,000, which is Rs 10,000 more than price iPhone is selling in US, users feel let down by exorbitant pricing of the much hyped handset in India.Says Mehak Chawla, "I expected it to be priced at around Rs. 16000 much less than the current exorbitant price." "If it's available for only 12000 in US, why is it so crazily being priced here," adds Mehak, an iPhone fan who has now shelved the idea of buying the phone. Apple iPhone 3G is available for $199 (Rs 8,358) in the US, plus $99 (Rs 4,158) as an annual contract with the single mobile operator AT&T, unlike India where the handset is linked to both Vodafone and Airtel. The handset will be launched on August 22 across India. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Airtel is also mulling the same pricing plan for Apple iPhone in India.Mehak's disappointment is shared by Aamir Khan, IT specialist at IT services company. "This is pretty discouraging. For me, 3G excitement has been punctured even before it could take off. If the best 3G phone is so costly, how do users get to know what high-speed mobile internet means", says Khan."When the access device itself is costly, how can we go for 3G services", adds Khan. The pricing has also surprised market analysts, who expected the pricing to be more reasonable considering the dynamics of Indian market. "iPhone is clearly over priced in India. Operators are looking at skimming the high end market in the country" says, Prasanto K Roy, Chief Editor at CyberMedia."The operators are basically following US model, pricing the handset at a very high price in the first year and then lowering the prices," adds Roy.However, Roy questions the judgment of using the same model India also, "Indian mobile users have been exposed to iPhone and are quite aware of the pricing world wide" adds Roy."They will feel let down", contends Roy.Roy also adds this pricing would only encourage grey market for these handsets in India."iPhone is available in Indian grey market at around Rs 20,000 much less than the price it will be sold here," adds RoyBut will the pricing impact sales of iPhone in India?. Roy feels the initial excitement and hype around iPhone will see the operators through the initial six months."Initially operators won't face any problems selling the iPhone in India and once the hype is over in another six months, I expect operators to revise the rates." adds Roy.Hitesh Raj Bhagat, editor of Living Digital, a consumer electronics magazine, though doesn't fully agree that iPhone is exorbitantly priced in India as compared to US. However, he contends the terms of pricing for the handset are not justified in India."See in US, they pay $199 upfront and another $99 as annual contract which roughly comes to $450 which is also reasonably costly", says Hitesh."Why they didn't follow the contract model here in India was operators were afraid that users will buy iPhone for subsidised cost and get them unlocked in grey markets to use any other network provider", adds Hitesh.This, Hitesh argues would have seriously dented operators revenues. However, Hitesh feels Vodafone, is completely unjustified when it comes to modalities charted out by company to sell handsets in India "In US you pay the money in installments and not upfront as it is the case here. And your iPhone is being locked with the operator and he decides which talk plan to choose", Hitesh. "This is totally unfair. You can't have cake and eat it too", adds Hitesh.
